To promote and to enhance the quality of life and study of UNYT students, to monitor student’s progress, upon registration, students are assigned a faculty advisor who is in charge to support his/her advisees in the course of their studies.
The basic tasks of the University’s academic advising program are:
- To help advisees identify and achieve their academic goals,
- To promote intellectual discovery
- To encourage students to take advantage of both in- and out-of-class educational opportunities
- To become self-directed learners and decision makers
Responsibilities of Advisors and Advisees
- Advisors are expected to meet with their advisees at least once per semester in formal sessions.
- Advisors will be in their offices during their office hours regardless of whether an appointment with a student has been booked.
- Advisors will collaborate carefully with their advisees, planning in advance the courses that are most appropriate for them during the following semesters and preparing graduation plans.
- Advisors will help to familiarize their advisees with the relevant policies, procedures, and rules of the college and its various academic programs.
- The advisor will target improvement for students who are struggling and make students aware of possible remedies to their problems before they are risking academic probation.
- Advisors will use alternative ways of communication with the student, i.e. by e-mail, word of mouth, message through a friend.
- The student should not hesitate to express even non-academic concerns affecting the academic life because the advisor will respect confidentiality and utilize the utmost direction.
- In order to monitor the progress and to ask the problems before they worsen and require official intervention, the student should understand the importance and fill with great responsibility the Student Evaluation Forms.
- In instances of complaints against any instructor, the student should consult the advisor, being confident that the advisor will handle these issues with absolute discretion. On the first occasion of a student complaining about an instructor, you will be encouraged to speak with the instructor directly and also the advisor will inform the instructor of the nature of the problem. If the problem persists, the student should notify the advisor and contact the head of the department as well. Try to resolve such issues informally, as grievance procedures are cumbersome, time consuming, and painful to both students and instructors.
- In the case that a student reveals a health problem that affects the academic course please inform the instructors as well as the advisor.
- The students encouraged to report any infringements of quality standards at UNYT through filing an Academic Petition that is handled initially by a Department Head (where appropriate) and subsequently by the Academic Council.
- Student Evaluation of Courses: Toward the end of each semester we ask students to evaluate their courses and faculty. Newly appointed faculty at UNYT are also assessed at the beginning of a semester, as a means of getting affirmation and feedback on their teaching at the delicate first time of their appointment.
- Students receive the evaluation forms in all of their courses. The academic administrations utilize this information in evaluating the quality of the course and the instructors. Feedback information is provided to the instructors in a statistical aggregate, so that student confidentiality is not compromised.
