“Desegregation of pupils in Albania and Kosovo: A Human Rights Challenge” | Academic Seminar
Today, November 21, 2022, UNYT Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, in cooperation with Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and Lund University Commissioned Education (LUCE), held the Academic Seminar entitled “Desegregation of pupils in Albania and Kosovo: A Human Rights Challenge.”
Students from the UNYT Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law of the University of Tirana attended this event.
The guest lecturers and the experts on the area addressed essential topics on the desegregation challenges of pupils in primary schools.
The human rights expert, Mr. Hektor Ruci LLM, lectured on ‘Handling Segregation in primary schools in Albania and Kosovo: An International Human Rights Perspective. Among other important highlights, Mr. Ruci emphasized Albanian institutions’ historical and international practices on the subject.
Ms. Ledja Mitllari Burnazi talked about the ‘Challenges of Tackling Discrimination in Primary Schools, where she elaborated upon the role of society, schools, and professionals’ role in creating a culture of non-discrimination in public space while making their contribution to creating a diverse society with equal rights and opportunities.
The distinguished expert of administrative law, Prof. Dr. Eralda Met’hasani Çani, lectured on the ‘Principle of Equality and Non-Discrimination in Albanian Schools: The Administrative Guarantors.’ In her speech, Prof. Dr. Met’hasani Çani highlighted the importance of the administrative mechanism and institutions in defining and protecting desegregation. In particular, she shed light on how anti-discrimination and the right to education is transposed in policy-making and legal instruments and addressed the role of central and local government and independent institutions in Albania after the developments of the ECtHR jurisprudence.
This seminar was coordinated by Mr. Andrea Mazelliu, Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Law, UNYT, and Mr. Mirsad Vitia, Member of the Prishtina Municipality Council, in the context of the Swedish Institute Academy for Young Professionals (SAYP) 2022.
