Populism in Europe – an open lecture by Senator Sybe Schaap
Last Friday, Senator Sybe Schaap visited the University of New York where he addressed an open lecture on the theme of “Populism in Europe: from the cultural, political and justice perspective”. Mr.Schaap presence in UNYT was made possible through the support of the Embassy of Netherlands, represented at this event by Mrs. Aida Lahi, Senior Economic Advisor.
In his discussion, Professor Schaap reflected on various aspects related to populism such as the concepts, relation to politics, evolution of democracy, ideologies and behavioral facets. Professor Schaap enriched his discourse by providing examples from current realities.
Prof. Ilir Kalemaj moderated the discussion highlighting important messages to the students who came up with questions and added their approaches to the topic.
Senator Schaap is a philosopher, researcher and a Dutch politician. Sybe Schaap has been a member of the VVD parliamentary party in the Upper House since 12 June 2007. Until 2010, he was the president of the Union of Water Boards. He was previously a philosophy professor. In the Senate, Mr Schaap deals with matters such as agriculture, nature, European Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation
